Beginner SMP training in Birmingham at Hair Savvy Studio

Your first course is the one that matters.

Good foundations make it easier to understand depth, spacing, pigment, hairline design and how a treatment changes as it heals. Weak foundations leave you trying to correct habits later, usually on paying clients.

The course is led by Alex, with Leaona Marie supporting the group. That means you get close feedback on your own work rather than watching demonstrations from the back of a room.

Why Six Days

Built around the full treatment cycle.

SMP is not one set of dots completed in a single sitting. A finished treatment develops across multiple sessions, and each stage should be informed by how the scalp has responded and healed.

That is why the course includes a complete model from start to finish, across all three treatment sessions. You see how the work settles, how density is built gradually, and how later sessions are adjusted in response to the result in front of you.

For a beginner this is the most useful part of the course. It connects what you learn in theory with the judgement you will need the first time you treat a client of your own.

You bring your own live model

Every student brings one live model for the practical part of the course. This is not just an admin requirement. Finding a suitable person, explaining the treatment clearly and building enough trust for them to commit are all part of becoming a working SMP artist.

Your model is also how you see a real treatment journey rather than isolated practice. You learn how the same head develops across three sessions and how to make decisions based on the healed result.

If you have genuinely tried and are struggling to find someone, speak to us before the course and we will do our best to help.

FAQs

Beginner SMP training, answered.

Do I need previous beauty, tattooing or barbering experience?
No. The Group SMP Fundamentals course is designed for complete beginners. Experience in hair, beauty, aesthetics, barbering or tattooing may make some concepts feel familiar, but previous SMP experience is not required.
How long is the beginner SMP course?
Six days of in-person training at the studio in Halesowen.
How much does the Fundamentals course cost?
The course fee is £2,995. A 20% deposit secures your place once group dates have been agreed, with the balance due 28 days before the course starts.
Will I work on a live model?
Yes. You bring one live model and complete the treatment across all three sessions under supervision, so you experience the full treatment cycle rather than a single isolated practical.
Do I need to bring my own model?
Yes, one live model is required for the practical sessions. Sourcing and briefing a model is part of the skill set you will need as a working artist. If you have genuinely tried and cannot find anyone, contact us before training and we will discuss the options with you.
What certificate do I receive?
On successful completion of the course requirements you receive an accredited Savvy Academy certificate, recognised by UK insurance providers. It is what your insurer will ask to see.
What support do I get after the course?
Six months of direct WhatsApp support with Alex, plus one free shadow session at the studio. That gives you somewhere to take the questions that tend to appear only once you start working independently.
What if I already have SMP experience?
If you already understand the fundamentals and want focused help with technique, consistency or specific areas of your work, the Advanced SMP Training route is the better fit.
When do courses run?
Group courses run on demand rather than to a fixed calendar. Once there are enough confirmed students we share date options and the group agrees on dates that work for everyone.
