Preparing for Your SMP Appointment

Preparing for Your SMP Appointment

If you’ve booked your Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) appointment, or you’re considering it, you might be wondering how to prepare.

At Hair Savvy Studio, we want every client to feel confident, informed, and completely comfortable before treatment day. Preparing properly helps ensure the best possible results and smooth healing process.

Here’s everything you need to know before your SMP appointment.

What Is SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses specialised pigments to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles.

It can:

  • Create the look of a fuller head of hair
  • Restore receding hairlines
  • Add density to thinning areas
  • Camouflage scars

Because SMP is highly detailed and customised, preparation plays an important role in achieving natural-looking results.

SMP Preparation

Avoid Alcohol & Blood Thinners

Alcohol and certain medications (such as aspirin or other blood thinners) can increase sensitivity and minor bleeding during treatment.

To minimise this:

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24-48 hours before your session
  • Check with your GP if you take prescribed blood thinners
  • Avoid excessive caffeine the day of treatment

This helps ensure better pigment retention and a more comfortable experience.

Wash Your Scalp Thoroughly

Arrive with a clean scalp on the day of your appointment.

  • Wash your hair thoroughly the night before or the morning of
  • Do not apply styling products (gels, sprays, fibres, or oils)
  • Avoid heavy conditioners on the scalp

A clean surface allows the pigment to settle evenly.

Cut / Style Your Hair As Advised

Depending on your desired look:

  • If you’re opting for a shaved/buzzed style, you’ll typically be advised to cut your hair down to a very short grade (often a 0–1 guard).
  • If you’re having density treatment, maintain your usual style so we can match the natural hair pattern accurately.

Your practitioner at Hair Savvy Studio will advise you beforehand on the ideal length.

Avoid Sunburn & Excessive Sun Exposure

Sunburned or irritated skin cannot be treated safely.

In the week leading up to your appointment:

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure
  • Do not use sunbeds
  • Avoid chemical peels or harsh scalp treatments

Healthy, calm skin leads to better pigment results.

Plan Your Schedule

Your scalp may appear slightly red immediately after treatment — this usually settles within 24–48 hours.

Before booking:

  • Avoid scheduling major events the same day
  • Plan around gym sessions (you’ll need to avoid heavy sweating for a few days)
  • Allow time for proper aftercare

SMP typically requires 2–3 sessions spaced a few weeks apart, so plan accordingly.

Understand the Aftercare Process

Preparation also means understanding what happens after your session.

You’ll typically need to:

  • Avoid washing your scalp for several days
  • Avoid sweating and heavy exercise
  • Stay out of swimming pools, saunas, and steam rooms
  • Keep the scalp moisturised as advised

Following aftercare instructions is essential for long-lasting, natural results.

What To Expect on the Day

When you arrive at Hair Savvy Studio:

  1. We’ll review your hairline design and density plan
  2. We’ll confirm pigment tone and placement
  3. Treatment will begin using specialised SMP equipment
  4. You’ll receive detailed aftercare guidance before leaving

Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort rather than pain.
